"Clays and Clay Minerals in Jordan” is the first book in a series of books written by Dr Hani N. Khoury, Professor of Mineralogy at the Department of Geology and published by the Deanship of Scientific Research at the University of Jordan. The book concentrates on clays and clay minerals as the most widely distributed materials in discrete deposits, soils and alteration and erosion products. Their properties cause them to be used in a wide spectrum of products from relatively low value materials, produced with a minimal degree of processing at one end to high added – value, highly refined clay.
Desires in Jordan to raise the standards of living are resulting in increasing demands for food, energy and mineral resources. This book is the first in a series of books written to present an objective view of the type and nature of industrial rocks and minerals in Jordan. “Clays and Clay Minerals in Jordan” has been written from the point of view of the author to inform the reader of the importance of clay minerals in life. The book is intended to aid students, geologists, engineers, planners, investors and decision makers in government and industry. Most of the material in this book is the result of studies carried out and accumulated by the author and his graduate students over the past several years. The chapters within the book examine the great diversity of clays and clay minerals in Jordan and concentrate on their mineralogical, chemical, and industrial properties and their origin. The main clay deposits in Jordan include among others kaolinite, bentonite, palygorskite, volkonskoite, black mud along the Dead Sea shore, and other clays in Aqaba, Wadi Araba, Tafilah, Petra, Arda…, etc.
