​Dr. Brown, from the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, is investigating the motivations of women triathletes who participated in the 2023 Kona World Championship. Participants completed a demographic survey and the 59-item Motivations of Marathoners Survey for Triathletes. Data analysis is scheduled for spring 2025, with study findings expected to be disseminated in summer 2025.

The study received no financial support. However, Dr. Brown was granted permission by her department chair to attend the championship, where she provided sherpa support to her coach and other acquaintances who competed.​
