​Belal Abboushi is a Lighting Research Engineer at PNNL, where he leads and conducts research in two main areas: lighting quality and germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) radiation for air cleaning in buildings. In the lighting quality domain, Belal focuses on creating better lighting metrics that reflect occupants' experiences and perceptions. His research addresses issues like discomfort glare, how spectral distribution affects the perception of brightness, and the uniformity of luminance. In the GUV research area, Belal evaluates the use of germicidal ultraviolet light to enhance air quality and energy efficiency in buildings. He is currently leading a project to assess the performance of upper-room and whole-room GUV systems, with a focus on their effectiveness, safety, and acceptance by occupants. Additionally, he is developing a framework for comparing the effectiveness and energy use of various infection mitigation technologies.​​
