Impacts of climate change on cultural dimensions and adaptation in Yanbu Al-Nakhl region Western Saudi Arabia

The study aims to show the role of climatic changes in the cultural dimensions and adaptation in the villages of Yanbu al-Nakhl. A descriptive and analytical approach along with field visits were used to achieve this goal. Climate data such as temperatures, precipitation amounts, and their annual deviations were analyzed, and trends were determined from 1979 until 2023. Furthermore, personal interviews were conducted with the elders of the region. Sixty-three questionnaires were distributed through Random Sample Method to farmers and agricultural landowners. The study found that the trend of temperature indicates an increase, and that the direction of the amount of rainfall indicates a decrease as indicators of climate change. The questionnaire results showed that farmers and owners of agricultural lands agree and strongly agree Increasing climate, geomorphological, hydrological and biological challenges that threaten cultural dimensions and adaptation, such as the frequency of heat waves in summer by (80%), high evaporation rates at a rate of (70.5%), dryness of spring water at a rate of (70.1%), and the spread of agricultural pests at a rate of (54.4%). Further, the respondents agreed and strongly agreed with the increase in the percentage of immigrants from the local population by (77.9%), the lack of local labor and its replacement by foreign labor by (74.5%). The study recommended building the necessary capacity and providing the necessary funding and support to improve the response to the effects of climate change.
