Prof. Abu Amrieh included in Stanford’s list of the top 2% of researchers

Stanford Elsevier Top Researchers List of the world’s best researchers included a faculty member in the Department of English Language and Literature at the School of Foreign Languages, Professor Dr. Yousef Abu Amrieh, among the top 2% of scientists in the world, according to the annual report it issued for the year 2024.

Professor Abu Amrieh obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester, UK, in 2011. He is the founder and leader of an international research group on Arab diasporic literary studies whose membership includes researchers from the US, UK, and Germany.

Professor Abu Amrieh published approximately 80 peer-reviewed papers in international journals. He is also a member of the editorial boards of many literary studies journals.This list, using Scopus data provided by Elsevier, aims to provide a standardized way to recognize researchers who have made a significant impact on their respective fields.

It draws from a variety of citation metrics, such as the h-index, co-authorship, and adjusted citation counts, to ensure fair and balanced representation of researchers. The list is updated annually, with career-long data and single-year impacts for transparency and current relevance.


Publications

Members of the group have achieved wide international academic recognition in the field of Arab diasporic literary studies by publishing high-impact research in books and prestigious academic journals. Covering a vast range of topics in the field of Arab diasporic studies, the group members' academic publications have not only highlighted their expertise as reseachers in the field, but have also given them the academic visibility needed to foster international research collaborations and projects with researchers in other fields of study.

In 2023, Dr Shahd Al-Shammari published a hybrid memoir which revisits personal journals to slowly piece together a narrative of chronic illness. Head Above Water is a moving account of survival, memory, loss, and hope. Dr. Nouri Ghana's book Melancholy Acts: Defeat and Cultural Critique in the Arab World (2023)​​ exlplores how the literatures and cultures of oppressed societies survive and flourish in spite of the overdetermining conditions of precarity and injustice of which they are a product and against which they protest. These questions are addressed through a series of wide-ranging engagements with Arab thought, literature, and film in the aftermath of the 1948 dispossession of Palestinians and the 1967 military defeat of Arab armies. Coming soon (Spring 2025) is The Mediterranean Question, a book written by Dr. Marta Cariello in collaboration with Iain Chambers. The book explores the gap between the Mediterranean reduced to a European and Western mirror by listening and attending to some of those other histories, cultures, and lives. Conferences

Members of the group have participated in several local, regional and international scientific conferences which have served as a venue through which their reserach findings in the field of Arab diasporic literary studies have achieved academic recognition and visibility. Participating in academc conferences has also enabled members of the group to present their research findings and highlight the importance of the study of Arab diasporic literature as an internationally researched field of study to other academic disciplines within the current global academic community. It has also brought to the fore the necessity of expanding research in the field of Arab diasporic literary studies by encouraging researchers from other academic disciplines to engage in collaborative projects and cross-border dialogue on areas of common global concern.


Prof. Yousef Abu Ameriyeh participated in the ​9th International Conference on "Voices from the Margins", which was organized by the Tunisian Association​ For English Language Studies between the 22nd and 23rd of November 2024. Prof. Abu Ameriyeh presented his paper "The Mediterranean as a Cemetery in Omar El Akkad’s What Strange Paradise" and received constructive feedback from the organizing committee and the audience.

Prof. Yousef Aby Ameriyeh attended the ​“32nd Conference on British and American Studies” which was organized by The West University of Timisoara in Romania between the 11th and the 12th of May 2024.

Dr. Eman Mukattash participated in the "Fourth Hawaii International Conference on English Language and Literatutre Studies" which was organized by the University of Hawaii at Hilo between the 19th and the 20th of February 2025. Dr. Mukattash presented her paper "Crevecoeur’s New American Man in Arab Diasporic Fiction: Diasporic Identity and the Past in Susan Maudi Darraj's The Inheritance of Exile: Stories from South Philly" ​and received constructive feedback from the organizing committee and the audience.Below are some of the recommendations:

1. Situating the study within the theoretical framework of transnationalism as it would help support the discussion on how first-generation and second-generation immigrants in the selected novel maintain ties with their homelands.

2. Defining some of the recurrently used terms in the study such as (the past).

3. Contextualizing the analysis of the selected novel in relation to the major historical, social and political events of the period during which the work is written.

4. Considering the differences found within members of the two generations of Palestinian-American immigrants in the novel due to other factors such as age

Dr. Eman Mukattash attended the "International Conference on New Horizons in Linguistics, Translation, Literature, and Education" which was held between the 10th and the 11th of February 2025.

Lectures and Seminars

Members of the group have held several academic lectures and seminars on a wide range of topics relating to the study of Arab diasporic literature. Those lectures and seminars have served as a venue for reserachers and graduate students to engage in cross-border dialogue, critical thinking and collaborative research projects. They have also offered a platform to exchange and refine ideas, receive constructive feedback and enhance academic networking in the field.

Prof. Yousef Abu Amrieh received an invitation from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Malta to give a series of lectures, seminars and public talks on Arab diasporic literature between 11 and 15/11/2024. One of the lectures was entitled "Avian Imageries in Arab Diasporic Literature"



Dr. Ahmad Shalabi presents a talk titled “Occidentalism Revisited: Insights from Anglophone Arab Diasporic Literature" on June 1st, 2024 at 6:00 PM Amman-time via Zoom. The session was moderated by Professor Yousef Abu Amrieh.




Prof.  Abu Ameriyeh presented the keynote talk "Arab Anglophone Literatures in Diaspora: Past, Present and Future Prospects" in December 2023 at the University of Skikda, Algeria.


On September 3, 2022, Prof. Yousef Abu Ameriyeh presented a keynote talk entitled "Towards a Poetics of Arab Diasporic Literature" organised by  the Association of Professors of English and Translation at Arab Universities, Amman



Translators as Fictional Characters in Contemporary Arab Diasporic Literature

In this public lecture, Prof. Yousef Abu Amrieh discussed  how contemporary Arab writers in diaspora represent translators in their novels. Drawing on the works of eight novels, the lecture highlighted how a fictional translator's identity is depicted as a site contestation.  The lecture was held at Amman Hall/Main Library/The University of Jordan on April 30th, 2024 at 13:30.



Supervision

Members of the group have supervised several theses and dissertations covering a wide range of topics in the field of Arab diasporic literary studies. Providing academic mentorship on research ethics, formulating research questions, objectives and methodologies and offering constructive and critial feedback have been among the various academic tasks members of the group have undertaken as academic supervisors. Such collaborative projects have not only enhanced their academic experience as instructors and researchers, but have also enriched the currect research corpus on Arab diasporic literary studies.


Academic Visits

Members of the group have conducted several academic visits to regional and international universities and academic institutions where they have been given the opportunity to share their research with renowned scholars in the field of Arab diasporic literary studies. Those academic visits have also enabled researchers of the group to take part in international collaborative projects connecting research in the field of Arab diasporic studies to research in other academic disciplines, stay up-to-date on recent research conducted in this field and achieve academic recognition within the globally expanding community of academic research.
