Reparative Dynamics of Memory: Testimonial Countermaps of Urban Palestine

This article explores memory as a countermapping mode in the context of Palestinian urban history and the colonial chronotope that is 'Israel-Palestine'. First, we outline a methodological framework for approaching memory and testimonial genres (in this case, predominantly oral interviews) that foreground personal memories of Palestinian cities. Subsequently, we analyse interviews conducted in Amman with Palestinians displaced from the 'West Bank' city of Nablus in 1967 and Yafa (Jaffa) in 1948. The article demonstrates the durability of internalised cityscapes in Palestinian memory despite displacement, toponymicide, occupation, and ongoing siege. We emphasise reparative mnemonics, or memory's transformative potential, in the Palestinian context. Our analysis also foregrounds the interpenetration of visual and semantic ways of remembering urban space, exploring the role of narrative, painting, and (counter)maps in reclaiming Palestinian urban heritage.
