Keynote Speaker: Unveiling Psychoactive Plants: Effects, Significance, Cultural Context, and Implications in Doping and in Community.
Abstract: This presentation discusses the emerging topic of plant-based doping agents and their potential to enhance athlete performance. It addresses the historical context of doping in sports, emphasizing the need for continued research and innovation to maintain the integrity of sports. The presentation provides an overview of specific plant species, including Ephedra sinica, Catha edulis, Cannabis sativa, Peganum harmala Erythropalum scandens, Rhodiola rosea, Tribulus terrestris, Panax ginseng, Withania somnifera, and Cordyceps sinensis, known for their traditional uses and anecdotal evidence suggesting performance-enhancing properties. The physiological effects and potential mechanisms of action of these plant-based substances are explored, critically evaluating the existing scientific evidence and the limitations of current studies. The challenges of regulating plant-based doping agents in sports are discussed, emphasizing the importance of standardized testing protocols and regulatory frameworks for fair play and athlete safety. Ethical considerations and implications for the future of sports are also addressed.
