THE HISTORICAL NARRATION IN AL-JĀMIʿ AS-ṢAḤĪḤ OF ALBUKHĀRĪ"

الرواية التاريخية  في الجامع الصحيح للبخاري

Abstract

The current study deals with the historical narration in Al-Jami' Al-Sahih of Al-Bukhari. The study investigates the cultural, scientific environment, era and factors that surrounded Al-Bukhari and had led him to write Al-Jami' Al-Sahih, such as the scholar preoccupation with debate and discussion of various intellectual, jurisprudential, philosophical, had ith, scientific, and linguistic issues. Responding to such factors, Sunni hadith scholars opened the door wide to recording hadith throughout the second and third centuries AH, which produced hundreds of thousands of books in various types of hadith books. These writings constituted valuable sources that AlBukhari relied upon when writing “Al-Jami' Al-Sahih", due to their availability in the cities of the Islamic world during this era. And this contradicts the prevailing inherited idea that Al-Bukhari relied only upon oral tradition while composing “Al-Jami' AlSahih", and that he wrote down the Sahih from his memory when he returned back to Bukhara at the last days of his life. These sources consisted works on hadith, interpretation, language, jurisprudence, history, biography of the Prophet Mohammad and various types of science. Thus, upon arrival of the Caliph Al-Mutawakkil (232-247 AH), he called for abandoning Mutazely debates, and order reviving the Sunnah, by teaching hadith, writing Hadith & Sunnah books, spreading hadith by preaching in mosques & scientific circles. And this was the motivation for Al-Bukhari's to write of Al-Jami' Al-Sahih. Hence, the study concluded that “Al-Jami' Al-Sahih," unlike other hadith works, included a mixture of hadith, jurisprudence, biography of Prophet Mohammad, history, language, interpretation, medicine, visions and other sciences, all under the name of the 275 hadith. Due to the difficulty of distinguishing between the hadith narrations and the historical ones, several historical narrations were necessarily dealt with as to hadith and were classified under the name of Hadith as well. However, the historical material constituted around two third of the hadith material, amounting 2,200 historical narrations out of 2,761 the total hadith of the book, plus the interpretation 146 narrations, but out of the “Mawkouf on Sahabah". The historical narratives conveyed events, narrations of the companions experience, Tafseer or Quran interpretation, parallel to the Prophet hadith, and even more important in some cases. The historical material also included the fatwas and comments of the Companions and their interpretations on hadiths, and the comments of Al-Bukhari himself, which we cannot count in the honorable Prophet Hadith. Also, of the interpretation material that AlBukhari counted as part of the interpretation of the prophet Mohammad, whom he interpret 10verses of the Quran. Even the narrations of the Causes of Descent or “Asbab Alnozoul" were narrated from the Companions and not from the Prophet Mohammad which should be considered as historical narrative and not Hadith.
