The conference aimed to present an authentic model of constructive interaction between higher education institutions and society with its concerns and problems, to draw a clear picture of the role of the humanities and social sciences in alleviating the burden on members of society in times of crisis, to demonstrate the positive impact of universities, and to clarify the role assigned to cultural institutions in establishing a cognitive approach to leading societies, in addition to proposing solutions and means to confront crises before, during and after they occur.
The conference on "The Role of Humanities and Social Sciences in Responding to Crises" at the University of Jordan, hosted by the School of Arts
, emphasizes the significant contributions that these academic fields can make in addressing societal challenges, particularly during crises. The humanities and social sciences play a crucial role in understanding human behavior, historical context, and societal structures, providing insights that can shape effective responses to ongoing crises.
This approach includes utilizing interdisciplinary research to explore cultural, social, and psychological dimensions during times of conflict or disaster. For instance, initiatives like those at the MIT Future Heritage Lab, which works with refugees in Jordan, highlight the potential of creative collaborations and culturally sensitive design to alleviate humanitarian crises by addressing emotional, cultural, and practical needs through art and technology.
Such efforts underscore the importance of integrating social sciences and humanities into crisis management strategies, helping communities better understand and navigate the complexities of challenges such as displacement, mental health issues, and loss of cultural heritage. By focusing on these intersections, these academic fields contribute not only to the immediate relief but also to long-term recovery and resilience-building.
Dr. Ann Al-Najdawi and Professor Rula Al-Sawalqa
played a key role in the Preparatory Committee for conference. Their involvement reflects their commitment to advancing research and contributing to the success of academic and professional events. As members of the committee, they collaborated on the planning and coordination efforts, ensuring that the conference will address important issues and offer valuable insights to participants. Their contributions are integral to the overall organization and execution of this significant event.
