The Ministry of Education

The philosophy of education in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is rooted in the Jordanian Constitution, Arab-Islamic civilization, the principles of the Great Arab Revolt, and the national Jordanian experience. This philosophy is reflected in the following foundational principles:

  • Belief in Almighty God.

  • Belief in the noble ideals of the Arab nation.

  • Islam as an intellectual and behavioral system that respects human dignity, elevates the status of reason, and encourages knowledge, work, and morality.

  • Islam as a comprehensive value system that provides sound principles and values forming the conscience of both the individual and the community.

  • The relationship between Islam and Arabism is intrinsic and inseparable.

The Ministry of Culture

Since the founding of the Jordanian state, education has been prioritized as a foundation for promoting an open Arab culture with a broader human dimension. From its earliest days, Jordan witnessed significant cultural activity, particularly at the court of His Highness Prince Abdullah I, the Founding King, who was a poet and a man of letters with a deep appreciation for literature and culture. His court became an active cultural forum.

The institutionalization of cultural work in Jordan emerged from accumulated efforts in both governmental and civic spheres. In 1966, the Department of Culture and Arts was established as a governmental framework to nurture cultural activities across the Kingdom. This entity aimed to fill gaps in cultural services, promote cultural and artistic matters, and cooperate with writers, intellectuals, and artists to support their work.

  • Vision: Towards a Jordanian civic culture with a human dimension.

  • Mission: To promote cultural action in Jordan and launch it into a free creative space; to build the capacity of local communities in managing cultural activities; and to harness culture to impact human life socially, economically, and intellectually—while respecting cultural diversity and embodying values of dialogue and coexistence.

Al-Shams Theater

Al – Shams Theater was inaugurated on November 2017, as an art space that showcases art in all its forms with a diverse work program that harnesses the power of performance, cultivates intellectual curiosity, and stimulates learning to make the arts accessible to all. Al Shams Theatre is an art space, established purely by the individual efforts of its founder, at his personal financial cost as a non-for profit institution as the first repertoire theater in Jordan. The name “Al Shams” is inspired by the French artist Ariane Mnouchkine’s Théâtre du Soleil. Al Shams cooperates with local, Arab and international artistic groups to dedicate theater as a cultural safe space that includes performing arts and young talents and is interested in developing the art movement in Jordan. To refine and develop the artistic talents and capabilities of youth, Al Shams has developed special programs through holding training workshops, art exhibitions, group meetings and anything in the field of arts. The theater has the possibility to hold art exhibitions, drawings, sculptures, and other artworks. Theater occupied a privileged position in the heart of Amman, Jordan, where the “Concorde” cinema was previously restructuring. And those in charge of this edifice seek to keep up with every update and opportunities that develops and increases its effectiveness, to achieve all the goals for which it was established and strive to achieve them, to make the Shams theater a mirror that reflects all kinds of arts and displays it to the public.
