Prof. Heba Alzer presented: Deciduous Dental Pulp Stem Cells, to BANK or not to BANK, that is the question.

The Third Jordanian Society of Pediatric Dentistry Congress and the 14th International Arab  Union Pediatric Dentistry Societies Congress

Dental pulp stem cells can be collected from extracted human permanent teeth or from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED). The latter has been a topic of discussion in recent decades. Due to the ease of SHED harvesting and the fact that exfoliated deciduous teeth are often considered medical waste, many commercial banks are promoting the idea of banking them for future stem cell therapies. SHED have therapeutic applications beyond the stomatognathic system, based on their multipotency and sensitivity to local paracrine activity. Thanks to their robust angiogenic, neurogenic, and odontogenic capabilities, they have been proposed for pulp-dentin complex regeneration. SHED transplantation has also shown significant progress in extraoral tissue repair and regeneration due to their ability to differentiate into different cell types and their paracrine mechanism. As a result, SHED banking is gaining traction with the goal of advancing tissue engineering, disease remodeling, and clinical treatments. This presentation will provide an introduction to dental pulp stem cells from deciduous teeth, covering what they are, how they are extracted, their potential and current therapeutic importance, and whether banking them is a promising idea or an overhyped one.
