Research Group Launched to Study Religious Communities and Non-State Actors in the Middle East

The Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II School of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Jordan, in partnership with the Politics and Society Institute, have launched a new research group titled “Religious Communities and Non-State Actors in the Middle East.” The group aims to provide in-depth academic and policy-oriented research on one of the most pressing issues in regional and international politics: the growing role of religious groups and non-state actors in shaping political, security, and social dynamics.

The research group brings together faculty members, researchers, and graduate students to study the ideological, structural, and strategic dimensions of these actors. It will also explore their impact on state sovereignty, national security, and regional stability, particularly in fragile or conflict-affected contexts across the Arab world.

The initiative seeks to produce peer-reviewed publications, strategic policy papers, and educational curricula, while also engaging in partnerships with key Jordanian institutions and international academic networks. The group is expected to become a leading hub for scholarly research and policy dialogue on religious and non-state actors in the region.

The group is chaired by Dr. Mohammad Abu Rumman, a professor of political theory. It includes researchers from the University of Jordan, Sciences Po University, and the Politics and Society Institute.
