About:

Dr. Salomón-Torres is a full professor in the Horticultural Engineer Educational Program and head of the research and postgraduate coordination at the State University of Sonora, in San Luis Rio Colorado Campus, Mexico. He is a computer engineer, has a PhD in Bioinformatics and a postdoc in date palm biology, where he is currently conducting his research lines.

His invaluable contribution to strengthening the Mexican date production chain, as well as the national and international projection of the Mexican date industry and his outstanding participation in the organization of the International Date Palm Festival, have been recognized by the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development from Mexico.

He has been Advisor to the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) for the Extension program, in support of date palm farmers in Baja California Delegation, Mexico.

Likewise, he organized and carried out for the Secretary of Agriculture of Baja California, the first diploma in the comprehensive management of date palm cultivation in Mexico, aimed at farmers and the general public in the valleys of Mexicali and San Luis Rio Colorado, with the participation of more than 100 attendees.

He has done strong collaborative work with date growers in Mexico, highlighting his constant participation and organization of free training courses for date palm growers in Mexico. He makes field visits to date palm plantations, in order to train and advise new date palm growers in this crop.

He is a passionate disseminator of scientific knowledge focused on the improvement of date palm production, participating as speaker in various international and national conferences, forums, courses, workshops and various academic events. He has developed research projects focused on generating unknown information for Mexican farmers, proposing alternative solutions to date production problems, and encouraging the development of innovation in the cultivation of date palms in Mexico, in order to strengthen the Mexican date industry.

From the academy, he actively participates in the development of the "Date Tourist Route", which is a project of the municipal governments of the cities of San Luis Río Colorado and Mexicali, where various companies in the date sector offer exhibitions of date products, fairs, gourmet dinners, as well as artistic and cultural events, in order to promote the national consumption of the date. Likewise, he has participated in numerous radio interviews, newspaper publications, television programs, news programs and a documentary, where he promotes the date culture in Mexico.

Since his work as a research professor at the State University of Sonora and as a date palm specialist, he has been constantly promoting and insisting that the municipal governments of San Luis Rio Colorado and Mexicali, as well as the governments of the States of Sonora and Baja California, recognize the importance of the culture of date palm cultivation in Mexico.

He is a member of the Organizing Committee and President of the Scientific Committee of the First and Second International Date Palm Festivals in Mexico, sponsored by the Khalifa International Award. Was the main link for KIADPAI to decide to come to Mexico and for the first time to sponsor a festival outside of a non-Arab country.

He has also participated as a member of the Scientific Committee and speaker at the Scientific Symposium of the International Date Palm Festivals in Mauritania, Morocco, Egypt, Pakistan and Jordan, co-sponsored by KIADPAI.

He is a Member of the Mejhoul International Network (MIN) and representative for Mexico. He translated into Spanish the book published by KIADPAI: “Mejhoul Variety, The Jewel of Dates", where he wrote a chapter.

He also teaches courses to undergraduate and graduate students, maintaining an active date palm research program, focusing in particular on improving date quality.

Likewise, Dr. Salomón-Torres is a member of the National System of Researchers of Mexico Mexican and belongs to the Academy of Computing. He is the author of more than 30 research papers in international indexed journals, 6 book chapters and two books, and has been a reviewer for multiple scientific journals.

Finally, Dr. Salomón-Torres has been the organizer of an International Date Palm Forum and an International Date Palm Symposium held in Mexico, with the participation of renowned international date palm researchers from countries such as the USA, Jordan, Morocco, Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Chile, Mexico, among others.
