What do you think social work is?

Social work is a professional and academic discipline dedicated to enhancing the well-being of individuals, families, and communities, particularly those who are vulnerable, marginalized, or in need. It involves a blend of theory, practice, and advocacy, aimed at addressing social inequalities, improving access to resources, and empowering people to achieve their full potential.

At its core, social work is guided by principles of human rights, social justice, and respect for diversity. Practitioners engage directly with people to address challenges such as poverty, mental health issues, abuse, discrimination, and homelessness, while also working at systemic levels to influence policies and social structures that perpetuate these issues. Social work emphasizes a holistic approach, considering the interplay between individual circumstances and broader social, economic, and cultural contexts.
