Inspection and Risk Assessment of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls Supporting Bridge Abutments

In their joint study, under a title of Inspection and Risk Assessment of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls Supporting Bridge Abutments, Prof. Bashar Tarawneh and Prof. Wassel Al-Bodour assess the condition and risk of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls used as bridge abutments. They analyze data from a large‐scale inspection program to pinpoint the most common failure modes affecting these walls, such as issues in construction, wall materials, and weak foundation soils.

Based on their findings, the authors propose a new inspection rating system and a risk-assessment framework to evaluate the health of MSE walls after inspection. They also recommend practical design and construction measures to mitigate future problems, aiming to enhance the long-term performance and safety of MSE abutments.
