Eng. Ghassan Sweidan is the Head of the Jordan Seismological Observatory (JSO), part of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Amman, Jordan. Under his leadership, the Observatory continuously monitors seismic activity across the Kingdom and surrounding regions. He oversees a national network of 23 seismic stations, including 20 local stations and three international stations affiliated with CTBTO and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). This network provides real-time data on both strong- and weak-motion earthquakes. In 2024, the JSO recorded 846 seismic events, 166 of which occurred locally in Jordan and along its borders. Mr. Sweidan has also supervised upgrades to existing monitoring stations—such as those at Yarmouk University, Azraq, and Al-Ashqaf—and led the establishment of a new seismic station in collaboration with the University of Jordan in Aqaba. He actively represents Jordan in international scientific forums, including the Science and Technology Conference 2025 (Vienna), where he highlighted the importance of developing an early earthquake warning system using regional and international data sources. In addition, he engages with governmental and private sectors, such as the insurance industry, to improve seismic risk assessment and preparedness in Jordan.
