This study aims to identifying the main types of land cover and land use in Wadi Ibn Hammad at Alkarak governorate in Jordan, and analyzing spatial and temporal changing rates of land cover and land use in it using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing techniques (RS).To achieve study’s objectives, Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was employed to analyze the topographic maps of Wadi Ibn Hammad (scale 1: 50000), and Landsat satellite images for the years 1986, 1996, 2006, 2016. The results of this study indicate that there are four types of land cover /land use in Wadi Ibn Hammad: the built land, agricultural land, barren land, and unused land. It also revealed that the changing rates of land cover and land used in this study are as follows: build-up areas 153.34%, agricultural land -42.57%, barren land 8.57% and unused land -8.85%. The results also demonstrated that the main factors of change the land use and land cover rates are: futility of working in the agricultural sector; high levels of poverty and unemployment at Alkarak governorate in general; high prices of the land due to using it for building purposes; lack of rainfall; poor services; decline of agricultural property due to the inheritance system.
