Abstract:
This research investigates groundwater resources in the Azraq Basin in Jordan using GIS tools. Groundwater in the study area is overpumped by domestic and agricultural uses; negatively impacting the ecosystem in the area. Groundwater recharge estimation was applied to assess the status of groundwater recharge within the targeted basin. The water budget method was applied in this study as it depends on actual measured data; the estimated average annual recharge rate for the period 2013-2020 based on the water budget approach was estimated at 87.225 MCM per year. Applying an aquifer recharge approach for the basin will support restoring the groundwater levels as the basin has high recharge potential regarding the hydrogeological settings, however, low rainfall amounts limit the water resources as the area receives low groundwater recharge.
