What the GP should know and do in the case of dementia

What the GP should know and do in the case of dementia

Background:
General practitioners (GPs) play a central role in the early identification, diagnosis, and ongoing management of dementia, yet variability in practice can delay optimal care.

Objective:
To summarize the key knowledge and essential clinical actions GPs should take when caring for patients with suspected or confirmed dementia.

Methods:
Evidence-based recommendations and best-practice guidelines were reviewed to outline core competencies, assessment steps, and management priorities for primary care.

Results:
GPs should recognize early warning signs, perform appropriate cognitive and functional assessments, rule out reversible causes, initiate timely referrals, and coordinate multidisciplinary care. Key responsibilities include medication review, safety and driving assessment, advance care planning, caregiver support, and regular follow-up to monitor progression and comorbidities.

Conclusion:
By applying structured assessment, timely intervention, and holistic management, GPs can significantly improve outcomes and quality of life for people living with dementia and their caregivers.WhatsApp Image 2025-11-10 at 16.18.55.jpeg
