Prof. Arouri took part in the 2019 WISE (World Innovation Summit for Education) conference, which was held in Doha, Qatar, from November 19 to 21. The event was organized by the Qatar Foundation and centered around the theme “UnLearn, ReLearn: What it means to be Human.” As a global platform focused on transforming education through innovation and collaboration, WISE 2019 challenged participants to rethink traditional educational models and consider how learning should evolve amid rapid technological, social, and environmental change. Over 2,000 attendees from more than 100 countries—including educators, students, policymakers, and social entrepreneurs—gathered to explore the future of education. The summit featured a rich program of panels, workshops, and talks covering topics such as artificial intelligence and the future of work, the redefinition of school purposes, social and emotional learning, education in refugee and crisis settings, lifelong learning, upskilling, and the ethics of education in the digital era. A major highlight was the awarding of the WISE Prize for Education, often dubbed the “Nobel Prize for Education,” to Sakena Yacoobi, founder of the Afghan Institute of Learning, for her pioneering work in providing education and health services to women and children in Afghanistan, particularly in refugee contexts. Youth engagement was also a key component of the summit, with young people actively participating as speakers and changemakers. In addition, WISE 2019 served as a platform for unveiling new research reports and educational projects addressing issues such as education financing, pedagogical innovation, and global learning metrics. Overall, the conference offered a dynamic and inclusive environment for envisioning transformative change in global education systems.
