Food Waste, Food Rescue, and Food Security in Jordan

Dr. Tamara Mousa discussed the relationship between food security and food waste in Jordan and possible solutions, and discussed establishing an interdisciplinary approach that encourages food industries and food outlets to donate food, reduce food production and losses, and penalize the businesses that waste food, as well as educate consumers about methods to decrease food waste at the household level. It is expected that this project will help in diminishing the gap between food loss/waste and food insecurity, via redirecting excess food to nourish the individuals in need (or animals) instead of ending up in landfills. It is also proposed that awareness level of consumers regarding food waste and methods to reduce it will increase. To our knowledge, research in this area in Jordan is scarce. Consequently, findings of this project will provide baseline data for other researchers about the role of reallocation of surplus food on reducing food loss/waste, and the effect of food redistribution on food security.
