Second language learning and teaching in the digital age

Dr. Sharif Alghazo’s talk explores evolving trends in second language learning and teaching, emphasizing the impact of digital technology on English Language Teaching (ELT). He begins with an overview of historical shifts, from traditional teacher-centered approaches to learner-focused methodologies in the 1970s, moving towards communicative and autonomous learning frameworks. In recent years, a technological shift has transformed ELT, incorporating tools like Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC), allowing for personalized, flexible, and interactive learning experiences. He discusses how digital advancements, including artificial intelligence, have expanded ELT into a "rectangle" of learning that integrates language, learner autonomy, and teacher facilitation with technology. While technology enriches language acquisition by providing authentic, real-world language experiences and increasing learner autonomy, Dr. Alghazo also acknowledges challenges like the digital divide and the need for teacher training. This evolving landscape offers immense potential for enhancing language learning in today’s interconnected, digital world.
