IRAQ AL-AMIR DESIGN CHARRETTE: From Tradition to Transformation: Connecting Local Architecture, Community, and Tourism

Senior architecture students from the American University of Sharjah, enrolled in ARC 502: Culinary Culture and History and led by Professor Paulette Singly, explored the deep interconnections between food, architecture, and cultural heritage through an academic visit to Jordan.

During their visit, students documented historic kitchens, examined the role of architecture in shaping culinary traditions, and engaged in hands-on experimentation with traditional recipes. These activities provided an integrated understanding of how built environments influence food culture and heritage practices.

As part of their academic program, the students participated in an interdisciplinary design charrette with faculty members and students from the University of Jordan, focusing on the development of a sustainable heritage trail for Iraq Al-Amir. The collaborative effort emphasized linking archaeological sites with local culinary traditions and agritourism initiatives, reinforcing the relationship between architecture, food systems, and community engagement.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to experiential learning, cross-cultural academic exchange, and the promotion of sustainable heritage-based development through architecture and tourism.
