The Department of Land, Water, and Environment at the Faculty of Agriculture / The University of Jordan organized, as part of its activities within the framework of the scientific meetings for honorary professors on the sidelines of the Second Honorary Professors Forum 2025, a seminar on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, for PhD students titled: “Re-establishing the Critical Environmental Component of Flow Regimes and the Socio-environmental Role in Preserving Flow Systems.”
The seminar featured distinguished participation from Honorary Professor Ross Thompson, Professor of Water Science at the University of Otago and a member of the ClimCLAW research group at the University of Jordan. It was attended by members of the research group, including Dr. Faihaa Al-Shibli, the head of the department Dr. Michel Rahbeh, laboratory supervisors from the department, and PhD students enrolled in the “Climate Change: Impacts and Adaptation” course.
During the lecture, Professor Thompson focused on the scientific research and measures undertaken in Australia to re-establish the environmental component of flow systems. He presented several findings related to flow regimes in the context of climate change and extreme events such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves. He also shared the key recommendations from the regional e-FLOWS project directed at decision-makers, local communities, and priorities for future research.
At the end of the seminar, the PhD students expressed the importance of interdisciplinary research collaboration and partnerships in addressing the environmental and water-related challenges facing Jordan. They highlighted that such meetings contribute to fostering hope for sustainable scientific solutions in the near future.
