Professor of the History of Western Philosophy The University of Jordan
Dr. Majeda Omar is a distinguished scholar and professor specializing in the history of Western philosophy, with extensive expertise in American pragmatism—particularly the thought of William James and Charles S. Peirce—as well as logical positivism, epistemology, and the philosophy of science. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh, where her doctoral work explored the intersections of science, truth, and religion in William James’s philosophy. Her academic foundation also includes degrees in philosophy and mathematics from the University of Jordan and Yarmouk University.
With over two decades of academic experience, Dr. Omar has served in numerous teaching and administrative roles at the University of Jordan, including Director of the Center for Women's Studies, Director of the Department of Media and Public Relations, Vice Dean for Quality Affairs, and Head of the Department of Philosophy. She has also directed the Royal Institute for Inter-Faith Studies, where she actively promoted intercultural and interreligious dialogue on regional and international platforms.
Dr. Omar's prolific research output spans over 30 peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals and edited volumes, engaging topics such as scientific empiricism, the theory of truth, intercultural philosophy, Islamic thought, and philosophical education. Her work reflects a broad intellectual commitment to both historical and contemporary issues in philosophy, often integrating Western philosophical traditions with Islamic and Arab intellectual heritage.
She has participated in and contributed to a wide range of international conferences and academic forums, including events organized by UNESCO, NATO, the European William James Project, and various academic institutions across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. In recognition of her scholarly and civic contributions, she was awarded the U.S. Department of State’s Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) fellowship in 2008.
In addition to her academic and research credentials, Dr. Omar has contributed significantly to interfaith initiatives, women’s studies, and cultural diplomacy, earning her recognition as both a thought leader and public intellectual. She is multilingual, with fluency in Arabic and English, and reading competence in German, French, Hebrew, and Latin.
