Sara Alhanbali, Associate Professor in Audiology at the University of Jordan, holds academic qualifications including a BSc in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of Jordan and an MSc and PhD in Audiology from the University of Manchester, UK. Her research focuses on assessing listening effort and fatigue in adults with hearing impairment to better understand hearing-related disability. This work addresses the significant impact of hearing loss on quality of life, including communication difficulties, social isolation, and increased cognitive load, all contributing to disability. Alhanbali's research challenges traditional methods of assessing disability in audiology, highlighting that self-reported measures of listening effort and fatigue more accurately predict perceived disability than conventional metrics like hearing thresholds and speech test scores. Her current efforts aim to develop more objective assessment tools such as pupillometry, EEG, and skin conductance, which can be applied clinically to personalize rehabilitation strategies and improve overall well-being for individuals with hearing impairment.
