Colorimetry in Dentistry
Colorimetry in Dentistry Research Group
Aims:
Standardize dental color measurement
Establish and disseminate ISO-aligned protocols (lighting, calibration, photography, spectrophotometry) and publish open SOPs.
Quantify clinically meaningful color change
Define MCID thresholds for ΔE00/TP00/WID/ΔL* using anchor-based methods and validate across materials and clinical settings.
Optimize restorative and adhesive workflows
Test effects of try-in media, resin cements, preheated “chameleon" composites, and finishing on final shade; issue chairside recommendations.
Advance peri-implant esthetics
Run trials on healing-abutment materials/coatings and mucosal color outcomes (ΔE00, Pink Esthetic Score, PROs).
Integrate AI decision support
Develop and validate image-based shade detection and quality checks; evaluate AI counseling for whitening and esthetics.
Embed colorimetry in education
Implement undergraduate/postgraduate modules, OSCE stations, and calibration exercises; supervise student projects aligned to group studies.
Translate to clinics and labs
Produce implementation toolkits (checklists, calibration cards, reporting templates) and pilot them with sector partners.
Practice open, reproducible science
Pre-register protocols, share datasets/code via DOIs, and adopt ICMJE/CRediT contributorship.
Build partnerships and capacity
Maintain a multidisciplinary network (UJ units, private sector, industry, international collaborators) and provide short courses for clinicians and technicians.
