The relevance of this research is determined by the importance of the development of the Secession style as a component of Ukrainian culture in the nineteenth and twentieth century, which influenced the creation of unusual techniques, specific themes, and combinations of visual and expressive means. The authors’ study aims at defining the essence and characteristics of floral motifs in the literary writings of Mykhailo Zhuk, a representative of the Secession style in painting and literature. The leading methods of research on this issue are methods of analysis, synthesis, deduction, generalization, and comparison of approaches, which will help determine the main essence and features of the Secession style in the writer’s work. The article presents various approaches to the study and interpretation of this process as a style in the Ukrainian verbal and visual arts of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; analyses the works of scientists and researchers engaged in the study of plant motifs in the writings; draws attention to the tales of Mykhailo Zhuk; proposes various methods of interpretation of folk motifs and style concepts of Secession art, which are presented through the prism of the worldview of the Ukrainian nation. The materials of the article are of practical and theoretical value for students studying literature, folk motifs in art, and Ukrainian folklore, which will help them develop their creativity, their own worldview, and professional readiness. Also, the information may be relevant to future writers, artists, scholars, art teachers, and literary critics, who will be able to investigate more thoroughly all of the multifaceted activities of Mykhailo Zhuk.
