The IEEE Jordan Section Won the 2025 IEEE MGA Outstanding Large Section Award
Sunday, June 29, 2025
In a new global achievement that adds to Jordan's record of scientific and technical accomplishments, the IEEE Jordan Section won the 2025 IEEE MGA Outstanding Large Section Award, the highest award given by the IEEE to its large sections (+1500 members) around the world, in recognition of its institutional and technical excellence and community services.
The IEEE is the world's largest professional technical organization, with 435 sections in more than 160 countries. Its sections are classified into three categories based on the number of members. The Jordan chapter falls into the large chapter category, with its membership reaching approximately 3,609 at the end of 2024, an increase of 33% over the previous year. This reflects its continuous growth and influential presence in the academic and technical community.
Dr. Mousa Al-Akhras, Chair of the IEEE Jordan Section and faculty member at the King Abdullah II School of Information Technology, the University of Jordan, expressed his deep gratitude to the university administration for its continuous support of academic activities and conferences, and for hosting many of the IEEE Jordan's section events. He emphasized that the university was a key partner in this success by facilitating his mission in leading the section, in addition to the support of faculty members and volunteers, most notably Dr. Mohammed Abdul Majeed from the Department of Computer Engineering, also a member of AIMeD research group.

He added that the University of Jordan's student branch is one of the most active branches in the Kingdom and the nucleus from which the Jordan section was launched. This reflects the University of Jordan's position in supporting both technical and student excellence.
The Jordan section's win of the award follows a year filled with qualitative achievements during 2024/2025, most notably the opening of seven new student branches at different Jordanian universities, bringing the total number of branches to 26; the establishment of eight new local groups specializing in modern technologies; the launch of 20 new technical units within Jordanian universities; and the increase in the number of student and professional units to 127.
The section also excelled in the award's criteria, which included institutional expansion and branch sustainability, growth in membership, implementation of technical projects serving the community, high-quality educational and professional programs, administrative transparency and interaction through social media, documentation of more than 1,473 events in one year, and effective representation at the regional and global levels.
This global achievement reflects Jordan's growing status as a regional technology hub and the success of the IEEE Jordan section as a global model for organization, innovation, and community service. It also confirms that institutional volunteer work, supported by Jordanian universities, is capable of achieving exceptional results that raise the nation's flag in international forums.
