Partial Solar Eclipse Observation at the University of Jordan - 2022

The Faculty of Science at the University of Jordan, in collaboration with the AstroJo Space and Astronomy Foundation, organized an event to observe the partial solar eclipse, during which 200 special eclipse glasses were distributed to university students to safely view the phenomenon.

Dr. Alaa Al-Azzam, a physics professor in the Faculty of Science, engaged with the students both before and during the eclipse. She supervised the observation process to ensure that students followed the correct viewing method by wearing the special glasses, while also emphasizing their adherence to general safety precautions.

Dr. Al-Azzam stated that the eclipse coverage in Amman reached 34%, while the highest percentage in Jordan was recorded in the Ruwaished area at 40%. Globally, the highest eclipse coverage was in Siberia, reaching 86%.

She added that the next eclipse is expected to occur in 2027 with a coverage of 86%, and in the city of Aqaba it will reach 100%, where it is expected that stars will be visible in broad daylight.

It is worth noting that a solar eclipse occurs on Earth twice a year, when the Moon passes in front of the Sun. This is typically followed by a lunar eclipse two weeks later. However, solar eclipses rarely occur over the same specific location on Earth.
