On September 5, 2021, Dr. Ala’a Azzam, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Jordan, appeared in a televised interview on Al Sharq Saudi Channel to discuss a fascinating astronomical topic: the death of the Sun and the future of our solar system.
During the interview, Dr. Azzam explained that like all stars, the Sun has a life cycle, and it will eventually reach its end in a process commonly referred to as the "death of the Sun." However, she reassured viewers that this event is not expected to occur for another five billion years, and therefore poses no immediate threat to humanity.
She noted that the Sun is currently in the middle of its life. In its final stages, it will expand into a red giant, potentially engulfing the inner planets, including Earth. It will then shed its outer layers and contract into a white dwarf, marking the final evolutionary stage of medium-sized stars like the Sun.
Dr. Azzam emphasized that studying such cosmic events is not intended to cause fear, but rather to enhance our understanding of the universe and support the advancement of astrophysics and space science.
