Phone Interview with Dr. Ala’a Azzam from the Faculty of Science on the Sighting of the Ramadan Crescent

On March 12, 2023, University of Jordan Radio conducted a phone interview with Dr. Ala’a Azzam from the Faculty of Science to discuss the sighting of the Ramadan crescent for the year 1444 AH.

During the interview, Dr. Azzam emphasized the importance of crescent sighting as both an astronomical and religious phenomenon to determine the start of Ramadan. She highlighted the scientific factors affecting the crescent’s visibility, such as the Moon’s position, its elevation angle, and weather conditions.

She also explained the role of modern astronomical techniques and precise calculations in supporting observation committees to accurately determine the month’s start, stressing the importance of combining practical observation with astronomical studies to achieve community consensus on the beginning of the holy month.

Dr. Azzam stressed the importance of cooperation between scientists and religious authorities to ensure accurate and reliable results in crescent sighting, which contributes to strengthening social and religious bonds within the community.
