Phone Interview with Dr. Ala’a Azzam on the Sighting of the Shawwal Crescent and Its Connection to the Solar Eclipse

On April 20, 2023, University of Jordan Radio conducted a phone interview with Dr. Ala’a Azzam, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Jordan, to discuss the sighting of the Shawwal crescent for the year 1445 AH.

Dr. Azzam emphasized the importance of crescent sighting as a vital astronomical phenomenon for determining the start of the Hijri month. She explained the scientific factors affecting the visibility of the crescent, such as the Moon’s position, its elevation angle above the horizon, and weather conditions.

She added that a partial solar eclipse occurred on April 20, 2023, visible in parts of East Asia, where the Moon covered a portion of the Sun. Dr. Azzam noted that this eclipse serves as an additional astronomical reference supporting the precise calculations used to determine the beginning of the new Hijri month in Jordan, due to the timing overlap between the two events.

Furthermore, she discussed the religious and social significance of crescent sighting, stressing the importance of combining scientific observation with astronomical studies to achieve greater accuracy in marking the start of the month, thus enhancing community coordination.

Dr. Azzam concluded by highlighting the importance of cooperation between scientists and religious authorities, as well as the crucial role of scientific research in supporting astronomical committees to produce accurate and reliable results in crescent observation.
